1981 Dodge Ram 150

Dodge introduced their first generation of trucks in 1980, ahead of the 1981 model year. The first to be introduced was the Dodge Ram 150, a precursor to the Ram 1500. Now, Dodge had used the name ‘Ram’ for its trucks and vans in previous years, but the 1981 model year solidified it as an official designation within the lineup. The 1981 Dodge Ram 150 came with the option of short, extended, or crew cab. For cargo beds, Dodge offered a six-foot-five-inch bed or an eight-foot bed. The first-generation Dodge Ram 150’s engine lineup was started by the Mopar 3.7L slant six. Meanwhile, a 5.2L or 5.9L Magnum V8 was available. Additionally, the Dodge Ram 150 was available with four transmission options, a four-speed manual, a five-speed manual, a three-speed automatic, or a four-speed automatic. Meanwhile, the Dodge Ram 150 was available in two-wheel or four-wheel drive drivetrains. As the model years progressed, minor upgrades were made. However, the 1988 model year saw significant improvements to the engine lineup. First and foremost, Dodge introduced an available 5.9L Cummins TurboDiesel inline-six engine. Meanwhile, the 3.7L V6 was replaced by one with a 3.9L displacement, and the 5.2L V8 engine received electronic fuel injection.

Ram 1500 Second Generation

In 1994, Dodge rolled out the second generation of the Ram truck, which was the first time the industry saw another ‘0’ added to the name, thus, creating the Ram 1500. The Ram 1500 got a complete overhaul for the 1994 model year, with designers aiming for the look of a big-rig truck look. The new look was received well by critics and drivers alike, with the newest model going on to earn MotorTrend’s 1994 Truck of the Year. In addition to the new body style, the powertrain lineup was upgraded again. The Ram 1500’s gas-powered 3.9L V6, 5.2L V8, and 5.9L V8 all gained multi-port fuel injection systems along with high-flow exhaust manifolds. Additionally, the second generation of the Ram 1500 was available in four trim levels: Work Special, LT, ST, and SLT. Atop the lineup, the SLT provided drivers with features typically only seen in cars at the time, such as power windows and door locks, air conditioning, a cassette player, and an AM/FM radio.

Third Generation Ram 1500

After the turn of the millennium, the Ram 1500 received another significant upgrade in 2002. Minor changes were made to the exterior for some modernization, while the most significant upgrades were less obvious. Dodge made significant improvements to the frame, engine lineup, and suspension systems. The third-generation Ram 1500 was the first to replace the live axle used on the four-wheel drive variants with an independent suspension system. The 3.7L V6 engine continued to be standard equipment for the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500, while a 4.7L V8 replaced the 5.2L V8, and the 5.9L Magnum V8 was replaced by a 5.7L HEMI V8. This model year also brought on significant upgrades to the trim lineup, introducing the SRT-10, which featured the 8.4L V10 engine from the Dodge Viper. The lineup was also updated with the introduction of the Power Wagon and Daytona trim levels.

Ram 1500 Fourth and Fifth Generations

The 2009 model year was when Ram split from Dodge, becoming its own brand and becoming the only truck provider for the Chrysler Automotive Group, while Dodge continued to focus on cars, vans, and SUVs like the Charger, Grand Caravan, and Durango. The 2009 Ram 1500 was available in either a regular cab with two full-size doors, a quad cab with full-size front doors and half-size rear doors, or a crew cab with full-size front and rear doors. Meanwhile, cargo bed lengths included five-feet-seven-inches, six-feet-four-inches, or eight-feet options, depending on the cab size. The engines from the third generation continued until 2012 when the Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine replaced the 3.7L V6. Meanwhile, the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 was introduced in 2014. The fourth generation Ram 1500 made more modern amenities available, such as additional entertainment features, heated seats, and power-adjustable pedals. In 2019, the Ram 1500 was upgraded to the most recent generation. The fifth generation Ram 1500 discontinued the manual transmission and regular cab, making a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and quad cab standard equipment. The 3.6L V6, 5.7L V8, and 3.0L EcoDiesel remained until 2023, when the EcoDiesel engine was discontinued. The fifth generation Ram 1500 also added advanced safety features, a backup camera, push-button start, larger infotainment touchscreens, and much more.

2025 Ram 1500

For the 2025 model year, Ram is introducing the sixth generation Ram 1500 which receives exciting new upgrades. The 2025 Ram 1500 is noticeable updated on the outside with reshaped headlights, a more aggressive stance, and an upgraded grille. Meanwhile, the powertrain lineup is upgraded once more. While the Pentastar engine remains standard equipment, the 5.7L HEMI V8 is replaced by a 3.0L twin-turbocharged straight-six engine, available in standard-output and high-output variants. Additionally, electric power is introduced to the Ram 1500 lineup for the first time in 2025, with the introduction of the plug-in hybrid Ram 1500 Ramcharger and the all-electric Ram 1500 REV, each featuring distinctive design notes, distinguishing themselves from the rest of the lineup. Finally, the Ram 1500 Tungsten trim takes the top spot, creating a model even more luxurious than the Ram 1500 Limited, which previously claimed the title of the most luxurious truck in its class.
