Pentastar V6
The Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine was introduced to the Wrangler lineup in 2011 and has been its foundation ever since. The Pentastar engine prioritizes efficiency by using eTorque mild-hybrid technology. This system replaces the alternator with a 48-volt electric generator which stores and uses electrical energy that otherwise would go to waste. This allows for increased fuel economy, smoother engine stop-start (ESS) function, higher torque, and smoother downshifting. The Wrangler’s V6 engine achieves an impressive 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. As standard equipment, the V6 engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. However, you can opt for a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission if it is your preference. Additionally, the V6 engine comes standard with Command-Trac 4×4. However, on V6 variants of the Rubicon, it is paired to Rock-Trac 4×4.
Turbocharged I-4
Up next is Jeep’s turbocharged 2.0L inline four-cylinder engine, which is standard for the Sahara trim and optional for the rest of the lineup. This engine provides higher torque output along with more fuel efficiency by using a smaller engine displacement, fewer cylinders, and a twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger. The turbocharged engine provides Wrangler drivers with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Similarly to the naturally-aspirated V6 engine, the two-liter turbocharged engine uses eTorque mild-hybrid technology. However, unlike the V6, it comes paired with Selec-Trac 4×4 and an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.
4xe PHEV
Jeep’s plug-in hybrid electric powertrain, named 4xe (four-by-electric), was introduced to the Wrangler lineup in 2021. The 4xe powertrain consists of the aforementioned two-liter turbocharged engine, a pair of electric motors, and a lithium-ion battery pack. The first electric motor is placed at the front of the turbocharged engine, replacing the alternator, while the second takes the place of the torque converter inside the transmission. The battery, tucked away underneath the rear seat where it is protected from the elements, has 400 volts. The 4xe powertrain comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Selec-Trac 4×4 as standard equipment. However, the Rubicon and Rubicon X trims feature Rock-Trac full-time 4×4. The Wrangler Sport S, Sahara, Rubicon, and Rubicon X trim levels are all eligible for the 4xe powertrain, while it comes standard on the High Altitude trim.
HEMI V8
The monstrous Wrangler Rubicon 392 is the only V8-powered Wrangler in the lineup. Underneath the hood sits a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine spanning 392 cubic inches. This shakes the earth with a matching 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, taking the Wrangler from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds. The HEMI engine is paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission that offers sequential shift control in the form of steering wheel paddle shifters for optimal performance and a more in-control driving experience. Optimized engine cooling is provided by the functional hood scoop, which features Jeep’s advanced HydroGuide intake system. This uses three distinct channels to remove up to fifteen gallons of water from the air intake and force it away from the engine. This allows for continuous engine airflow even when a bow break washes over the hood while you put the Wrangler’s water-fording capabilities to use. To emit the HEMI’s signature growl, the Rubicon 392 features dual-mode active exhaust with Normal and Performance modes.
